About Plain Wills

Wills, probate and inheritance tax are things most people only deal with at the worst possible time — after losing someone, or while facing their own mortality. Official guidance is often written for professionals, and a lot of what fills the gap online is trying to sell you a will-writing package.

Plain Wills exists to explain the UK process in plain English: what actually makes a will valid, what happens if you do not have one, what probate involves, and how inheritance tax really works. No jargon left unexplained, and no guide written to steer you towards a particular provider.

This is general information about the law in England and Wales, not personalised legal advice, and it is not a substitute for a solicitor. Where a decision genuinely depends on your own circumstances — a contested estate, or complex inheritance tax planning, for example — every guide says so plainly and points you towards solicitors accredited by STEP or Solicitors for the Elderly.
